Why are the sounds on my computer distorted?

About a week ago I tampered with the volume controls a little bit and ever since the sound has been off. The front and back sounds are very distorted and I can barely hear it whereas the sounds from the sides are completely fine. Anyone know how to balance the sound volume so I can get it regular again?
