Was your child's first language one you didn't understand?
I am an English speaker who had my first child in a foreign country. I probably understand less than 50% of the local language and only speak English to my 2 year old daughter. My daughter attends a Danish daycare and hears Danish all around her. My husband is fluent in Danish however speaks mainly English to me and to our daughter. Lately though, he has been speaking more and more Danish to her because she seems to listen and respond more when he does. She seems to understand everything in English and can say a lot of English words, including sentences, however, it is clear that her preferred language is Danish. Her Danish seems far more advanced. I'm wondering about others with similar experiences. Did you feel like you were missing out a little? I'm sure there are so many things she has said to me that I just don't understand and because I don't and can't help her with it, I hope it's not hindering the learning process. Any experiences?
