My Android phone doesn't update the time when it is in standby!?

I'm told that there is an option which sounds like the culprit. Under the date and time settings there is a box checked that says Automatic: Use network-provided values. The only problem, this option is faded out and unchangeable. Is there any way to change it or fix my time updating problems. It wreaks havoc with my alarm clock.
